Schrijfster Stephenie Meyer, bekend van de immens populaire Twilight-boeken en -films, produceert de film Austenland, naar het boek van Shannon Hale. De film is momenteel in post-productie en een verschijningsdatum is er nog niet, maar op haar website schrijft Meyer over haar avontuur als producent van deze ‘indie film’. Op de foto zie je Meyer, auteur Hale en een deel van de cast van Austenland.
De film gaat over Jane Hayes, een ogenschijnlijk normale New Yorkse, maar die een obsessie heeft voor Mr. Darcy, na het zien van Colin Firth in de BBC-serie uit 1995. Geen enkele man kan tegen haar ideaalbeeld op. Als een rijk familielid haar een reis naar Engeland nalaat – om precies te zijn, een vakantie in een Austen-resort – lijkt het ideaal toch heel dichtbij te komen.
In de film zien we een aantal bekende gezichten. Bijvoorbeeld Keri Russell uit de serie Felicity, Jane Seymour, bekend van onder andere Doctor Quinn, en JJ Feild, die we natuurlijk allemaal kennen als de buitengewoon charmante Henry Tilney uit de verfilming van Northanger Abbey (2007).
Shannon Hale heeft deze maand ook een nieuw boek over Austenland uitgebracht: Midnight in Austenland. De beschrijving luidt:

When Charlotte Kinder treats herself to a two-week vacation at Austenland, she happily leaves behind her ex-husband and his delightful new wife, her ever-grateful children, and all the rest of her real life in America. She dons a bonnet and stays at a country manor house that provides an immersive Austen experience, complete with gentleman actors who cater to the guests’ Austen fantasies.

Everyone at Pembrook Park is playing a role, but increasingly, Charlotte isn’t sure where roles end and reality begins. And as the parlor games turn a little bit menacing, she finds she needs more than a good corset to keep herself safe. Is the brooding Mr. Mallery as sinister as he seems? What is Miss Gardenside’s mysterious ailment? Was that an actual dead body in the secret attic room? And-perhaps of the most lasting importance-could the stirrings in Charlotte’s heart be a sign of real-life love?
